How it All Started

Ten years of captivating designs, thousands of enchanting moments. It was on this Daufuskie Island porch that Kay Stanley imagined how linen and leather could marry with colorful patterns and timeless island stories, and Spartina 449 was born.

The company name originates from the lush, green cordgrass that flourishes in the saltwater marshes along the Carolina coast. Its Latin name? Spartina alterniflora. And the number 449? Well, it’s the address of that cozy cottage on Daufuskie Island where the Lowcountry landscapes and creaky floorboards helped bring a novel handbag company to life.
