Starting this Independence Day, The Liberty Bell will be on display in full color over Charleston Harbor! Created by Artist Nancy Baker Cahill, “Liberty Bell” is a new public art project utilizing augmented reality for an interactive experience that includes animation and sound. The virtual exhibit can be seen using a free app download and will be visible beginning July 4th from the Battery near White Point Garden, facing Fort Sumter.
TO EXPERIENCE THE ARTWORK: Download the FREE 4th Wall app from the App Store or Google Play, using Wifi. The app works on iPhones 6s and above (iOS11 and up), any iPad with AR capability, and Androids with AR Core. Once downloaded, be sure to “Allow Access” to photos, microphone, camera and location. Be sure device sound is on. The 4th Wall app does not collect any user data.
DIRECTIONS TO VIEW ARTWORK: From White Point Garden (standing at the Battery), as close as possible to the fence by the water, facing Fort Sumter. This site is wheelchair accessible. Duration of the work is approximately 1 minute 30 seconds, and it is recommended that viewers experience the full animation with sound.
This project is commissioned by Art Production Fund and presented here in the Lowcountry in local partnership with The Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation. Charleston is only one of six cities in the country chosen to participate in the Liberty Bell. Viewers are encouraged to adhere to all social distancing guidelines as instructed by the CDC.
