September and October Festivals

As Summer comes to an end and Fall begins, the cooler weather will be a welcome change here in Charleston. What's not to love about crunching leaves under your feet, carving Jack-O-Lanterns, watching scary movies, and smelling like a bonfire for the entire season? Halloween and Thanksgiving take place every year, but there are some festivals coming up that are starting to become annual Charleston traditions! Check out the list below to learn more about upcoming events taking place this Fall.

Butterfly Bash

Magnolia’s first ever Butterfly Festival will delight all as we celebrate butterflies, bumblebees and other pollinators. Listen to guest speakers, participate in a demonstration, take a guided nature walk, and be dazzled by butterfly stilt walkers! Tagged butterflies will be released at the event as well. There will be lots of activities for butterfly enthusiasts of all ages. Guests are encouraged to come dressed in their best butterfly costume!

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children 6-12 years old, and free for children 5 and under. Purchase tickets at the event.

8th Annual Sweet Tea Festival

What started as a small event on the lawn of Hutchinson Square has blossomed over the last few years to an incredibly well-attended festival. Live music, artisans, and more! Be sure to get your picture with local “celebrity” Mason, The World’s Largest Sweet Tea Mug!

Mugs will be sold so you can sample all the varieties of sweet tea!

This is a family-friendly event, but no pets will be allowed.

Park Circle Oktoberfest

Get your lederhosen and boot-shaped mugs ready for the 4th Annual Park Circle Oktoberfest! This year there will be a ton of new exciting changes beginning with the move to Riverfront Park.

Here are some events that happened at last year’s festival that may come back this year:

The Oktoberfest Games!

Keg Toss – Who can hurl the keg
Boot Race – Relay obstacle course with beer
Brewers Carry – Brewers take on a farmers carry
Beer Mile – drink and run
Stein Hoist – Outlast

Blade and Bull Axe Throwing trained people and hosted axe-throwing competitions!

Kid Zone with jump castles, face painting, and sand art.

Where: Riverfront Park

Time: 12-6 p.m.

Autumn on the Ashley

Handcrafted items from dozens of Lowcountry artisans will be for sale at the 12th annual Arts and Crafts Fair! Featured items include pottery, wood carvings, paintings, textiles, jewelry, photography, natural skincare, lawn art and more.

Magnolia Plantation will also be hosting an Autumn plant sale in conjunction with the Craft Fair. Stop by to purchase your favorites, including Fall planted bulbs, Fall blooming Camellia Sasanquas, Winter blooming Camellia Japonicas, ferns and much more!

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children 6-12 years old, and free for children 5 and under. Purchase tickets at the event.

Taste of Charleston

Live entertainment including the Battery Brass Band, a new Charleston Cultural Center, Kid’s STEAM Kitchen area, Private Cabanas for sponsors and a special VIP section with chef demos will take the Taste of Charleston to new heights and allow guests to experience the very best of the city’s award-winning dining scene.

One hundred percent cashless, this is the first event in Charleston to use RFID wristbands, allowing guests to pre-load points to be redeemed for bites and sips from over 40 of Charleston’s most beloved restaurants.


$20 General Admission: Entry to the event, and your wristband will start with $10 (10 points) loaded onto it

$125 VIP Admission: Entry to the event, and your wristband will start with $25 (25 points) loaded onto it. Entry to a special VIP section with additional food, alcohol, and entertainment, along with chef demos, and culinary discussion.

Summerville Italian Festival

A taste of the Old Country in the Lowcountry! Experience authentic Italian cuisine in the heart of downtown Summerville from the Lowcountry Italian Eateries. Enjoy a wide variety of Italian and local wines and entertainment from local artists. Celebrate Italian Culture and Heritage with food, song and dance!

Admission is free and there will be fun for the whole family!

When: Sunday, October 20th

Where: Hutchinson Square

Time: The festivities start at 11:00 a.m. and end when the last grape is stomped at 6:00 p.m.
