Aiken brings back the Steeplechase with a twist

Every March, the Spring Steeplechase brings tens of thousands of people together to watch some of the top jockeys and horses in the country race. And not just that. Contests award prizes for best tailgate, crazy pants, bow ties and more. It’s an Aiken tradition and the most anticipated annual event for local residents. However, this year Aiken had to find a new way to carry on the event. Enter the Virtual Steeplechase.

On May 2nd, Aiken will be streaming a special version of the race. You’ll still be able to tailgate, enter the fashion contests, and now your child can get in on the race! The Steeplechase is encouraging

Since not everyone who wants to participate might not have the materials to make stick horses, the Aiken Center for the Arts will donate kits to build 100 stick horses. Register for a free stick horse kit here!

By uploading photos here, people can enter contests for Most Dapper Bowtie, Best Home Gate (tailgating at home), Most Creative Spring Hat, Best of Show Stick Horse, Best Turf Course, Drink of the Day and Wore it Best Crazy Pants. Photos also will be shared on the Aiken Virtual Steeplechase Facebook and Instagram pages.
