CHARLESTON, S.C. (Lowcountry Weekend) - Dance lovers rejoice! The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre has returned to the stage.
Using the universal language of dance as a medium for honoring the past, celebrating the present and fearlessly reaching into the future, the Ailey company has performed for an estimated 25 million people around the world and will now be wowing audiences right here in the Lowcountry. This mixed repertory program will feature new and classic works, including the beloved Ailey masterpiece Revelations.
This program uses African American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and holy blues to explore the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul.
One of the dancers taking the stage is a young woman who grew up in North Charleston. Ashley Green is a 2016 graduate of the Charleston County School of the Arts. Ever since she was a young girl, Green has wanted to be a part of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. She was about seven when she drew a doodle, proclaiming her love for the legendary African American dance troupe.
Tickets are now on sale for this two-night event at the Gaillard Center on Tuesday and Wednesday. For more information on all of the Ailey Company programming and to get your tickets today visit the Gaillard Center website.
